Built in 1248 by Louis IX, Sainte-Chapelle is recognized as one of the greatest architectural masterpieces of the Western world. It was referred to as "a gateway to heaven" in the Middle Ages.
The present 75 metre spire was added in 1853 after three previous spires had been destroyed by fire.
