This single-spanned bridge across the Seine is named after the toll that pedestrians had to pay when they crossed it - the toll being a double dernier. 12 deniers equalled 1 sous and 20 sous equalled 1 livre. The value of a livre was equivalent to that of a pound of silver!
The first bridge at this point was built in 1515 by order of Francois I. The current cast iron bridge is the third Pont au Double and was opened in 1883.
