The "39 Steps" waterfall is a popular destination for a short walk through the Hogsback arboretum. The name has nothing to do with John Buchan's 1915 novel, nor the Alfred Hitchcock movie that followed the book's publication. Instead, I believe, it is a rough estimation of how many "steps" the stream negotiates as it flows down the rocks.
I have never counted them, but I would guess the number is much lower than 39!
OJ - back in circulation after a break that included a few days at Hogsback
