A LATIN SCHOLAR - WELCOME VISITOR IN ANY GARDEN


The Cape Robin Chat is a welcome visitor in any garden where he spends his day scratching in the undergrowth for insects, caterpillars, worms and even small frogs.  The robin's singing ability is remarkable and varied - I often describe his repetitive call with slight variations at the end of each phrase to that of a Latin scholar revising his verb declensions!

The robin's alarm call, a fairly guttural three syllables has led to him being called ugaga in isiZulu and Jan Frederik in Afrikaans.
