The Latin Quarter stretches from the Seine southwards to the Luxembourg Gardens and contains many prestigious institutions of learning - top high schools and the Sorbonne. The name dates back 800 years when most higher learning was conducted in Latin. The narrow streets and old churches (St Severin, St Julien-le-Pauvre, St Etienne-du-Mont), small restaurants and bookshops make this an interesting area to explore.
The Pantheon faces the Luxembourg Gardens at the southernmost edge of the 5th arrondissement.
