The Dordogne was once the primary means of transporting goods in the Aquitaine region. Boats sailed or were rowed up and down the river transporting timber, farm produce and, of course, wine, as far as Limeuil where the Dordogne was met by the Vezere. Bergerac was an extremely important port city, until the introduction of the railway made the river boats redundant.
