The town of Domme is situated on a rocky outcrop 250 metres above the Dordogne where it was founded by Philip the Bold in 1281. Its mountain top position has led to it being referred to as the "Akropolis des Perigord". It is a popular tourist destination and many of the old buildings have been converted into boutiques and studios offering visitors the opportunity to sample the wares of local artisans and artists.
