Bordeaux has been a port on the Garonne since Roman times and as one strolls throuh its busy streets, evidence of its occupation by Romans, Franks and the English is visible. The predominant style of the centre of the city and its waterfront dates back to the 18th century with many elegant buildings, fountains and statues. Its close links with the wine industry, past and present, are evident everywhere.
