This was once the entrance to the city of Paris and gave access to the ancient north-south roadway through the ancient city. This porte was built in 1672 by Frances Blondel and was decorated by King Louis XIV's sculptor, Francois Girandon. The figures commemorate the victories of the French armies in Flanders and the Rhine in that year.
