The Seine is a very busy waterway and in fact has been for centuries. These days the bateaux mouches ferry tourists up and down the river with guides pointing out historic sites on the banks. The Batobus water taxi offers a service to commuters looking for something different and less crowded than the Metro. Large barges carry the garbage of Paris upstream to recycling and processing depots and smaller boats transport building material probably far quicker than heavy duty trucks fighting their way through congested streets.
