BOLETUS EDULIS

An extended week-end searching for mushrooms like the one above is the reason for my absence from the bloggersphere for the past few days!

The boletus edulis (also known as cep (English), cepes (French), porcini (Italian)) was regarded by the Romans as "the food of the gods"!  It is found in mature oak forests and well worth the effort spent in trying to find them.

Introduced to South Africa when oak saplings bearing the spores of the fungus were brought from Europe probably as early as the 17th century.
