ANOTHER CITY ... ANOTHER STATUE

This magnificent statue of Louis XIV by the sculptor, Francois-Joseph Bosio, may be found in the Place des Victoires where it was unveiled in 1822.

It depicts the King as a Roman magister militum - a field marshal. Louis XIV was known as Louis the Great and also as the Sun King. He reigned from 1643 until his death in 1715.

No campaigns demanding #LouisMustFall have threatened the existence of the statue despite the socialist revolutions of 1848 and 1871 and the German occupation during World War II; unlike the Rhodes Memorial in Cape Town which featured on this blog on 7 January - a statue under threat.
