HOTEL DE VILLE

This photograph was taken exactly two years ago - 16 December 2013, on a beautifully sunny midwinter morning!

The Paris city hall was destroyed by fire in 1871 so the current building is a reconstruction of the original 17th century structure, fortunately the impressive and highly ornate towers, chimneys and statues were retained.

Pedestrians strolling through the square in front of the city hall are probably blissfully unaware that the square was once the site of public hangings, burnings and other horrific executions like that of Ravaillac, the assassin of Henry IV, in 1610!
