KEEPING AWAKE THE SENSE OF WONDER

Marc Chagall's ceiling in the Paris Opera Garnier exemplifies his comment that "the dignity of the artist lies in his duty of keeping awake the sense of wonder in the world". This more than 240 square metre canvas required 200 kilograms of paint and took eight months to complete. Its contemporary design imposed on a Neo-Baroque building in the 1960s caused a controversy, but its vivid colours and modern, dynamic depiction of historic composers, actors and dancers soon won the hearts of the people of Paris.
