When I took this photograph almost two years ago, who would have thought that this street in Saint-Denis would be the scene of the dramatic confrontation between police and terrorists that we saw yesterday.
The poster in the photo reads, Ensemble, nous sommes Saint-Denis (Together we are Saint-Denis) and that was the impression created by the people we interacted with at the Basilque, at the busy Sunday market, in a cafe and in the street. Although it was apparent that they represented diverse ethnic, religious and linguistic backgrounds, the sense of community was obvious.
