This striking statue of Charlemagne stands in the grounds of the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Although it appears modern it dates back to 1882 and is the work of the brothers, Charles and Louis Rochet. It depicts King Charlemagne and his loyal servants, Olivier and Roland and his mighty sword, Durendal.
Charlemagne (742 - 814) was crowned as Head of the Holy Roman Empire at the Vatican in 800 and was described by Pope John Paul II as the "Father of Europe".
