PETANQUE

Boules or petanque is played throughout France by people of every age and gender. Games are played in the parks during lunch breaks or in the early evening after work.  What intrigues me is that the surface does not have to be level, unlike the immaculate greens required for lawn bowls.  The petanque "pitch" can be "well-worn" like the one above photographed near the Tour Eiffel.  If asked, the players will probably point out that both teams play on the same surface and will face the same challenges - which, I guess, is true.
