PARC MONCEAU BASIN

The Parc Monceau now provides Parisians with a haven of peace from the busy (and noisy) boulevards outside, but it appears to have not always been like that.

Imagine the excitement and loud cheers that greeted Andre-Jacques Garnerin on 22 October 1797 when he made the first recorded parachute landing in the world and landed in this park!

Or the noisy spectators who would gather around the naumachia basin to watch the re-enactment of famous naval battles using model craft.  The Corinthian columned colonnade (shown in this photograph) formed the background on one side of this basin.
