The English millionaire and francophile, Richard Wallace, donated fifty drinking fountains to the people of Paris in the 19th century. This was to ensure that a safe source of potable water was available to all.
Today, the number of these fountains in Paris has grown to more than 80 with many replicas to be found throughout France and the rest of the world, for example, in Montevideo, Quebec, Haifa and Amman!
The four sisters supporting the top of the fountain symbolize kindness. simplicity, charity and sobriety and were designed by Charles-Auguste Lebourg.
The fountains are maintained and still supply fresh potable water except in mid-winter when they are turned off to prevent damage through freezing.
