SAINTE-CHAPELLE RESTORATION

The interior of Sainte-Chapelle has been under restoration for more than 40 years.  The number of visitors, the weather and air pollution have all affected the magnificent stained glass windows, the intricately painted statues, columns and walls.  Most of the funding for the work has come from corporations and private donors.

It was hoped that the work would be completed by 2014, the 800th anniversary of the birth of Louis IX (or Saint Louis) who reigned from 1226 until 1270.

Louis IX built Sainte-Chapelle to house the Crown of Thorns which he purchased in 1238 from Baldwin II, the Emperor of Constantinople.
