The Bois-de-Boulogne was formerly an area set aside as a hunting ground for the Kings of France. It covers 850 hectares and includes 28 km of bridleways and 15 km of cycling routes. Two horse racing courses are found in the forest, L'Auteuil and Longchamp. It is a popular recreation area for the people living in the western arrondissements of Paris.
