Perceptive visitors to Paris will have noticed these poignant reminders of darker days in the recent history of the city. This week Parisians celebrate the 70th anniversary of their liberation from German occupation on 25 August 1944. These plaques commemorate the French resistance fighters who lost their lives "for the liberation of Paris".
It is clear from the number dated July or August 1944, that many battles occurred between the French and German forces as the Allied armies grew closer and closer.
