100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE START OF WORLD WAR I

The tomb of the unknown soldier with its flame of remembrance is found under the arch of the Arc de Triomphe. With the many parades and sombre services commemorating the start of World War I a hundred years ago, we are again reminded of the death and destruction which results from all conflict.

The Great War began on 28 July 1914 and ended on 11 November 1918 and resulted in the death of an estimated 17 million people and 20 million injuries, making this war the deadliest in history.
