High above the city of Grenoble one finds this impressive fort built between 1823 and 1848 to protect the Dukedom of Savoy against attacks from the north and west where one found the border between France and Piedmont. Remnants of earlier fortifications are still visible particularly those dating back to the 16th century.
The bastille is accessed via a cable car system (la Téléphérique) affectionately known as les bulles (the bubbles). This was the first city cable car system in the world pre-dating those of Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro.
The panoramic views from the bastille are breath-taking and well worth the seemingly precarious trip.
