THE PORT OF LIMEUIL

The once busy river port of Limeuil lies at the junction of the Vezere and Dordogne rivers. Its buildings indicate that it was once a vibrant regional centre of commerce, but all that came to an end when the use of riverboats to transport goods to and fro between Bordeaux and the hinterland was taken over by the faster and more reliable railways.

The buildings of Limeuil remain outstanding examples of the use of sandstone, limestone and timber in construction - the arches of the doorways and gates are particularly interesting.
